Grotto Canyon | Ice walk | Ancient Pictographs

Here is a fun hike to do with the kids…. Head on up to grotto canyon which is Between Exshaw and Canmore. Strap on you ice cleats and get ready to hike up a canyon with ancient Pictographs. The pictographs were painted between 500 and 1500 years ago.  They were painted with red ochre. The pictographs are on the left hand side of the canyon just before to reaching the waterfall. They are about eye level. Unfortunately they are slowly getting wiped away due to the oils in our hands.  The trailhead parking is at Grotto lake. You will hike west for about 1 kn before entering a tight canyon. This is where the ice cleats come in handy. The river can sometimes be like a skating rink. So proceed with caution.

A nice short hike for a family. This spectacular hike is one that often goes unnoticed.  We drove past this one for years til we finally stopped in to take a look.  We were not disappointed.  Keep your eyes open for fossils on the hike. Quesnel Forks |  Cariboo Ghost Town

Quesnel forks(Quesnelle Forks, also simply known as “The Forks” or grandly known as “Quesnel City”) is located approximately 10 Km from the small town of Likely BC. Quesnel Forks was founded in 1860. It was a stopping point for the miners on the way over to Barkerville. That is until they built a road through Quesnel and bypassed the forks altogether. Spend the afternoon checking out the old Ghost town.  Imagine over 5000 people called this place home in the 1860s.  There is so much to do and see at this once thriving town. Here is a great youtube video on Quesnel forks.  Gold trails and Ghost towns Quesnel forks

Loop Brook : Glacier National park

Learn a little bit about the railway and stretch your legs on this short hike through a bit of history.  Marvel at the engineering of the past century. The loops hike shows how the stone pillars helped the railroad gain some extra height by making a figure 8 to climb up the valley. Nice short hike , about 1 mile long.
